The History
In 1906, American naval architect Lewis Nixon invented the first sonar device to detect icebergs.Later on, during World War I (From 1914-18), a need to detect submarines increased the need for sonar devices.
What uses Sonar?
- Fishing boats use sonar to see where majorities of the fish are and how far of close they are to the ocean floor.
- Marine scientists may use sonar to map the hills, valleys, and other features of the ocean floor. This returns pictures of objects in the water.
- Some aquatic mammals use sonar to find food.
